Romagnoli (Marche, Italy)

Renato Romagnoli operates a small winery in the village Morro d'Alba - which is near Ancona, and far away from Alba, Piemont!

He has become quite famous locally for making the best version of wines from a local variety of grapes, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba. This unique floral vine is cultivated only at this location within a radius of 15 km. Renato produces truly charming wines with great originality and has an uncompromising level of quality. The winery's vineyards extend over an area of about 11 hectares and are located in two large DOCs: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, and the limited territory of Lacrima di Morro d'Alba. The winery is family owned by the Romagnolis over three generations. The company is particularly linked to the territory and its history, as evidenced by some of its labels: BARBAROSSA, in honour of Frederick I Barbarossa, which is said to appreciate this wine in the siege of Ancona. Fredericus and Stupor Mundi, in honour of Frederick II of Swabia, was born in the nearby town of Jesi in 1194.

The grape – Larcima di Morro D’Alba

Nothing much is published on this unusual, local variety online or in wine magazine. As in many cases, the Italian wine bible, Ian D’Agatas “Native Wine Grapes of Italy” gives us most insights: “An aromatic red grape and apparently closely related to Aleatico, while it has nothing to do with Lacrima Cristi, a wine from Campania made with different grapes. Even in the Marche region it is limited mainly to the province of Ancona, where the DOC wine Lacrima di Morro D’Alba was created, there were only seven (!) know hectare of Lacrima under vine, surviving thanks to the dedication and passion of producers such as Stefano Mancinelli. The intense aroma of lavender, red rose, cinnamon, and nutmeg is unforgettable, coupled with strongly saline and floral dark berry and black cherry flavours.
