Donato's basic, yet powerful Primitivo is a seductive, full-bodied and well-rounded wine. Herbs, oranges and black cherries characterize its strong bouquet, the taste is spicy-fruity, soft and supple.
This wine is very fruity (plum!) and has a lot of body. 14.5% alcohol sems a lot, but it is very well embedded in tons of fruitiness and substance.
Grape
Primitivo (also known as Zinfandel) is a variety of black-skinned wine grape that produces wines with a extraordinary high amount of dry extract. DNA fingerprinting has revealed that Primitivo is genetically equivalent to the Croatian grapes Crljenak Kaštelanski and Tribidrag, as well as to the Zinfandel variety grown in 10% of Californian vineyards. The grape found its way to the United States in the mid-19th century, where it became known by variations of the name "Zinfandel", a name which is probably of Austrian origin. The more detailed relationship between Primitive and Zinfandel is described very well in this article:

Wine Making
Made from Primitivo di Gioia del Colle 100%, the grapes undergo gentle grape pressing, maceration with submerged cap fermentation at controlled temperature for 10 days and racking. Aged in steel and placed on the market a month after bottling.
Tasting Notes
Ruby red with violet hues, the scent shows aromatic herbs, orange peel and black cherry. The mouth is full and juicy. With its soft, supple tannins that Primitivo is the perfect wine for a long, enjoyable evening.

Primitivo goes well with hearty game dishes, roast beef, pasta and spicy salami, or cheeses. The spiciness of this wine allows it to pair well with Indian or spicy Chinese dishes. Very versatile wine.
