testSordo Giovanni (Piedmont, Italy)

Location

Azienda Agricola Sordo Giovanni is located just beneath the village of Barolo itself, in the beautiful wine town of Castiglione Falletto in the Province of Cuneo, near Alba.

History

This family-run farm has been producing wines for more than three generations. It was founded as long ago as the early 1900s by grandfather Giuseppe. The turning point in its fortunes came when Giorgio’s father, Giovanni, and his wife Maria, custodian today of the company’s history, purchased numerous vineyards on prime sites - the so-called “Sorì” - in the Barolo wine-growing area.

The soil on these vineyards is composed of very deep, compact calcareous marl packed with micro-elements, and when combined with the temperate climate of the Langhe it provides the ideal environment for the growing of Nebbiolo, a very vigorous, demanding variety that can produce fine wines with considerable ageing potential and brimming with aromas.

Single Vinayards

Sordo winery is very fortunate to call a number of top crus their property, and besides their “Barolo Normale”, they are bottling 6 amazing different single vineyard crus from 6 different Barolo villages! Few family-run wineries in this area can boast such wide selection:

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione in the village of Castiglione Falletto - the Sordo top crue

Barolo Parussi in the village of Castiglione Falletto

Barolo Gabutti in the village of Serralunga D’Alba

Barolo Monvigliero in the village of Verduno

Barolo Perno in the village of Monforte D'Alba

Barolo Ravera in the village of Novello

Rocche di Castiglione vineyard, April 2016

But the estate has even more vineyards for other wines - the estate extends over a total of 68 hectares, 53 of which planted with vines located in the villages of Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti and Marianot), Monforte (Perno and Massucchi), Barolo (La Volta), La Morra in Santa Maria district (Capalotto and Galina), Novello (Ravera, Panerole and Serra), Castiglione Falletto (Rocche, Scarrone, Garbelletto and Parussi), Grinzane Cavour (Castle and Raviola), Verduno (Monvigliero) and Vezza d’Alba.

The family-run winery is equipped with modern facilities for winemaking and for the storage. An impressive cellar aging furnished with Barrels Oak of different capacity allows a perfect ripening and evolution of the wines. All production processes both in the vineyard that in the Cellar refer to strict traditions handed down by our fathers.

WineProvisionShop visited the Sordo winery in early 2016, and we were deeply impressed by their wines.

During our vertical tasting of their top Barolo (Roche di Castiglione), we found that the optimal vintages to drink right now are 2006 and 2008. We therefore imported a range of classic/great vintages from their top Barolos (2011, 2010, 2008, 2006, 2004 and 2001; click on wines for more details).

MERUM Ratings

As an avid reader and all-time fan of the wine magazine MERUM (http://www.merum.info/), we like to reproduce the most recent evaluation of all 7 Sordo Barolos to give you an independent picture. Note that the top rating of three hearts is an exceptional rating, only a handful of Barolos achieve this rating each year (for this 2015 rating, 235 Barolos were rated and only 6 received the 3 hearts top rating).
