The “small brother” of Brunello, this wine is made from the same grapes (Sangiovese Grosso) from the same terroir. The selection of grapes is different, and the maturation is significantly shorter. It exhibits similar characteristics on a lighter overall structure, such as notes of violet and tobacco, plum, spices and earth. A dry red wine, with very smooth flavour of a classical Sangiovese.
The wine is aged for 18 months in large oak casks of French origin with about 10% of the wine being aged in small French barrels. The vines for this wine also face full-south. Only 9,000 bottles of the Rosso di Montalcino are produced annually.
