Nebbiolo is the noble grape of Piedmont, the well-known iconic wines of Italy Barolo and Barbaresco are made 100% from this variety. What is not so much know is that just 20 km north of the main growing region of Barolo and Barbaresco, the Roero region has wine of similar quality, yet slightly lighter and elegant style. This basic Nebbiolo from the Gallino winery exemplifies this style, for a very affordable price tag.

The name "Nebbiolo" has 2 possible origins: ripe Nebbiolo grapes have a very prominent "bloom" that gives them a frosted, foggy look, so the name could come from from nebbia, Italian for fog. Alternativly, the name may simply originate from "nobile", Italian for noble. Nebbiolo also goes by the names Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca in other Italian areas.

This selection Nebbiolo from Gallino was aged for four years in 25 hl used Slavonian casks. This is a serious and glorious Nebbiolo, redolent of blood oranges, pomegranate, rhubarb, and an intoxicating bouquet of wild flowers. Quality-wise and by its enormous structure, this wine comes close to any fine Barolo.
